Description
We have two stoneware Thomas Battell jugs in our collection. The first one, on the left hand side of the photo, is on loan from the Town of Cobourg. It is inscribed with “1. T. Battell. Grocer & Wine Merchant. Cobourg”. The second jug, on the right hand side of the photo, was donated to us. It is inscribed with “1. Thos. Battell. Cobourg”.
Notes
The Battell family were settled here in 1828. Thomas was born between 1831-1833. He had a grocery store on King Street West just east of the Freeman S. Clench home. According to records, his business was running between 1865-1881.
