Penmanship/Calligraphy by Margaret MacDonald Details
Margaret MacDonald wrote her name using a variety of decorative lines and shapes. She penned her given name in cursive writing, creating a fluid flow of letters which she linked with a thin, elegant line. She treated her last name differently, composing block letters with projecting embellished lines called serifs. In both names Margaret also created small squares, small dot-in-circles, and parallel lines to further enliven the lettering.
Even printed forms such as this 1888 Deed of Land document had decorative lettering to embellish the contents and suggest a certain formality of intent.
