Beaverton Airman is awarded the DFC

Squadron Leader Fred Kelly is third member of unit to be honoured within two months

Ottawa, Feb. 24 – Squd. Ldr. Fred Kelly, of Beaverton, leader of a Spitfire fighter unit in a Canadian fighter wing overseas, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and became the third member of his squadron to win the award within two months, RCAF headquarters has announced.

Only a few days before a signal reached the squadron announcing his award, Kelly had shot down a German fighter during a big engagement over France in which Canadian airmen destroyed four German aircrafts, damaged many others, and shot up a number of locomotives.
