Lieut. Merle E. Dickerson of Lindsay enlisted in the Canadian Army on 5 June 1942. He entered the Royal Canadian Engineers with the rank Lieutenant. Lieut. Dickerson trained at Petawawa Camp, Ont. and Brockville O.T.C. He was later moved to Halifax, N.S. and was sent overseas in November 1943.

Lieut. Dickerson served in Newfoundland and had the experience of the Halifax riot as he was stationed in that city on V.E. Day. Lieut. Dickerson arrived home in December 1944.

As of 10 December 1945, Lieut. Dickerson was still awaiting discharge. His wife and family lived in Lindsay at 19 Sussex St. S. during his service and his home was formerly with his mother on Russell St. West.
