THE BUTCHER BY-LAW.--On Monday last Mr. John D. Naylor paid the fine and costs incurred by his violation of the by-law for the protection of butchers in this municipality. The knights of the cleaver do not, however, appear to be very jubilant over their success, for the measure--which it is said they now regret--has provoked a hostile feeling which is about to culminate in the establishment of another butcher's shop. Meat being one of the necessaries of life, there should be no law to prevent people from buying it wherever they can get it the cheapest, especially as butchering is so profitable that those who follow it can get along very well even if they make little or nothing during four months of the year. There are several businesses which in this country scarcely anything can be done at in winter; and yet the persons engaged in them manage to make very good livings, though perhaps not quite as good as those made by butchers.
