Overseas, he served with the 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Private McGrath was killed in action during the Battle of Vimy Ridge in an attack from the southwest of Thelus to Farbus on April 9, 1917.
His name is recorded on the Vimy Memorial in Vimy, Pas-de-Calais, France.
