Black and white portrait photograph of Charles Matthew Lowrey [Lowery], a prominent resident of Queenston. The photograph is mounted on oversized cardboard frame.
Charles Matthew Lowrey was born in Vanessa, Ontario, Canada on 29 Aug 1855 to David Jackson Lowrey and Elizabeth Catherine Teeter. He married Helen Emily Wallace (1856-1922) and had 5 children (Robert, Harold, Luella, Edna, Marguerite). Later in life Charles M. married Mary McBride. He passed away on April 22, 1931 in Queenston, Ontario, Canada.
Notes:
Obituary (1931) reads:
"Deep regret is felt in Niagara-on-the-Lake in the passing of the late Charles Matthew Lowrey, aged 75 years, at his home in Queenston on Wednesday, April 22. The remains are being laid to rest this afternoon in St. David's United church cemetery. Service being conducted at the family home in Queenston and at 3.30 o'clock at St.Davids's United church.
The late Mr. Lowrey has been a well known figure in Niagara for a number of years, having opened the first canning factory in Niagara in 1891. Later he sold his interests to his two brothers, Frank and Harry, and started the Lowery Canning factory at St. Davids. He also operated stores at Niagara Falls, St. Davids and Queenston and was postmaster in Queenston for 13 years. He acquired the controlling interest in the Queenston quarry and turned it into one of the greatest industries of its kind in the Dominion. He was a deputy reeve in Niagara township.
Mr. Lowrey was married twice and is survived by his widow, two sons and three daughters by his first wife — Robert of Niagara Falls, Harold C., Toronto, Mrs. Dr. J. F. Rigg of Niagara-on-the-Lake; Mrs. J. T. Reeley, Niagara Falls and Mrs. Thomas Clifford of Oshawa; two brothers, Edward D., Frank H., and two sisters, Mrs. G. Vivian and Mrs. Franklin Woodruff of St. David."
