A native of the Netherlands, Professor Peter Naus attended the Catholic University of Nijmegen where he specialized in social psychology, receiving his doctorate in 1970. After teaching at the Catholic University and then at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, U.S., he came to Canada in 1973 and joined the faculty in the Department of Psychology at St. Jerome's. He taught courses in two areas: human sexuality and aging, death, and dying.
While at St. Jerome's Professor Naus served in many capacities: as Director of the Studies in Family program; as Director of Studies in Sexuality, Marriage and the Family, a program he was instrumental in establishing; as Chair of the Department of Psychology; as Vice-President and Academic Dean; as a member of the committee that administered the University of Waterloo's gerontology program; and as a member of numerous other committees at St. Jerome's and at the University of Waterloo.
In 1983 Professor Naus was awarded the Leo Lafreniere Memorial Award from the Ontario Family Life Educators Association. After his retirement in 1996 he was made an Honorary Member of the University in 1997 and in 2007 he was named Chancellor of St. Jerome's University serving as Chancellor until 2011.
Professor Naus also devoted his time and expertise to many community organizations including the Community Justice Initiatives, Freeport Hospital in Kitchener, the Health Services Committee of Grand River Hospital, the Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region, and the Interfaith Pastoral Counselling Centre of Kitchener.

St. Jerome's University is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and is situated in the University of Waterloo. It was founded as St. Jerome's College in 1865 by the Congregation of the Resurrection. In 1959, it was granted university status and changed its name to the University of St. Jerome's College. It has been federated with the University of Waterloo since 1960. In 1998, the name was officially changed to St. Jerome's University.
