The passing of the old year recalls the great trials, sorrows, tragedies, and also the many honors won through the whole world.. It is with the greatest pride that we look back upon the achievements of our army, our navy, our leaders, our government and our own people during the past year. Never in the history of the world has there been a greater demand for leadership, heroism and unity of nations, classes and creeds. All have risen to the occasion, prejudice has been cast aside in the great cause. The salâ€" vation of humanity from the oppression of Kaiserism has been the instrument used to bring about this result. By its strength the universe has been freed from the most barbaric struggle that has been waged. By its objective being attained, the world has been raised to a higher level. ‘KThe saerifices made to attain this have been most severe. There is hardly a home that has not felt its hand in some measure. Some have had greater burdens than others to bear. Yet all have borne them nobly, and as a result of it we are the better people for having passed through these great trials and sorrows. They have raised us from our selfish ideals to the great spirit of a umversal brotherhood and has develâ€" oped a dove for our fellowmen. Thus we have been raised to a higher plane in this hfe It will be reflected in our daily and national life and make us a greater people. There is no alternative left for the people of Weston.. It is now up to every ratepayer in the town to cast their vote in favor â€"of the school byâ€"law. As there is nothing else to take the voters out, many will Say, "Well, I will not bother about the byâ€"law." You will stay at home and find on Thursday morning that the byâ€"law has been defeated. Those who are opposed will have made sure that they got out their votes and thus won the day. This cannot be. We must see to it that the vote is out and is cast for the byâ€"law. Never in the history of Weston was there a time that the gatepayers have been asked to use their rights to promote a worthy object than at the present time. The stake is the greatest placed upon the table. The whole future of Weston and the district around here is now before the ratepayers. By your answer to the question you will determine the future of this town. By your answer you will state whether the children of this town are to have the very best education that can be given them. By your answer you are to decide if Weston will produce men and women who will be leadersâ€"or will they be slaves? If you deny them proper school accommodation, you are retarding the rising generation. If you cast your ballot against the byâ€"law, you are turning down the men whom you have elected as your representatives on the Board of Education. These men have deâ€" voted their fime, money and energy to make provision for the education of the children of Weston. They have decided that this is the best site and proposition that can be submitted to the people of Weston. Will you not abide by their decision? Wi#ll you not back up your own men? . Yes, you must in all fairness to the children of the town vote yes in answer to the question submitted to you. Vote ear]y and see that your ne'igh'bor votes, and above all mark your ballot for the children and their fuâ€" ture. | # During the past year there have been wonderful strides in the industrial life. and the doors of posâ€" sibilities have been opened wide in this country of ours. Canada, and especially Ontario, has develâ€" oped unthought of industries to a most successful conclusion. A comparison with the previous years will show the wonderful development in this direction. â€" Financial enterprise has also passed all bounds of expectation under able leadership. In this way the country has been aided and great prosâ€" perity maintained in our borders. All have benefited by the shrewd foresight of these financial leadâ€" ers. : In short the past year has been one that we can with all reverence point to with great pride. The sacrifices have not been made in vain, and the efforts put forth have been most successful. With the ushering in of 1919 there comes upon each one of us a big responsibility. If we are to maintain the peak reached in the past year in all matters, then there must be that same spirit of true brotherhood prevailing. . Love must be the solid basis to build upon.. We must set out to show that "might is not right", but that "love is supreme." With this as our message for the new, year, we feel that it will help us in the great task that now lies before us. Thus our wish is to all our readers for a most happy and prosperous new year built upon the true foundation of love. in c e w ie cise m meea c c on he‘ ce se s dn ioeei e Xt We have this year a good Council, every man there, has had great experience in municipal life. All are new with ability and have a desire to see that the best thing possible is done to make our town. They want your coâ€"operation. Many important questions will have to be debated and acted upon during the coming year. The railway must provide better transportation facilities:. Radial and steam ought to be made give us a better service and rates. The roadways need attention and many of the ditches require more care. Some thought has to be paid to the development of our town park to a proper recreation grounds for our people. ‘This is a place that demands immediate action. . Efforts to secure other industries in our céntre‘will come under, the notice of this Council. But the most imâ€" portant question of the Council will be the dealing with the housing situation. No sideâ€"stepping can be thought of on this. Everyone knows that we require more houses in Weston. Everyone_states that it is the means of lowering, our tax rate. It is.evident that if we are to derive the full benefits of the industrial prosperity and our ideal location as a residential and manufacturing centre,/there must be about two hundred new homes built in this coming year. ty Our government has come to the aid of municipalities with their loan. They will give every assistance to the building up of a place. iiI),t is, however, up to the Council to act. There must be the greatest care taken to guard against any building that will be a detriment to the town in the years to come., Each district must be allotted for its class of homes. Each manufacturing centre must Be laid out and the proper equipment that goes with all the building trades must be up to proper standards. Thus the work for the Council of 1919 is heavy. T hey, will have no time to loaf if they will pay strict attention to all that is ahead of them. j ; With the election by acclamation of the Weston Council for 1919, it means that there is very little interest naow in the work of the Council until next December. This is a great mistake. Every ratepayer should become interested in the work of the Conmncil at each meeting. They have the power to spend the money that has to be raised by the taxes. They have the power to do as they see fit upon all matters that are of the most vital importance to the people. They have it within their powâ€" er to place the town into great debt or to make the interests pay. As long as you sit back and do not take any notice, they will not take any notice of you or your ideas. If, however, you show an interest by attending the meeting then they will take notice of your wants and ideas. . _ , * An hPEF.NEW IFAR s( C( ty oA ' < 1 i/ J\\ & ï¬\)\)/ P ~â€";s§;*"‘; l?fl 't::i_. : : :’:-\{\:;_ \\)/1/\/ J ts s _ f@\‘k\‘\% JP /%/;/7â€"%\. /‘;ï¬Ã©\:\,\ e +7 e ) d zn wApraat‘s ; wWEST YORKS NEWSY WEEKLY YOU MUST SUPPORT IT WEDNESDAY, JANUARY iST, 1919 OUR NEW COUNCIL Visitation Day in connection with the Armenian and Syrian Relief Fund will be held on Sunday, January 5th, and the collections will be taken on January 19th, in commemoration of the old Armenian season. A case in point has recently been brought to our attention â€" a farm laborer with a wife and five small children. He had not been feeling right for some months, not sick enough to go to bed, or stay indoors, but always tired. His daily work about the farm had become a task to him. So of his own accord he went to the Muskoka Free Hosâ€" pital, to try and find out what was the matter. He was found to be sufâ€" fering from tuberculosis, and was immediately taken in and put to bed. The doctors say this man is making a good recovery, and that he will shortly be able to return home. The Muskoka Free Hospital for Consumptives is now appealing for aid in fighting the Great White Plague. The money you give will help restore to health just such deâ€" serving cases as this, bringing happiâ€" ness untold to reâ€"united families. Contributions may be sent to Sir William J.
