THE INTELLIGENCER, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1968 o Years from Now The problem already had leen receiving public attenion. In 1854 the Upper Canada ^egislature voted $80,000 for stablishment of a school for tie deaf and blind. Political uncertainties delyed any action however, and , was not until a new pattern f government emerged with ionfederation, that definite interest was renewed. In 1869, the Legislature finally confirmed its decision to build the centre -- choosing Belleville despite pressure from Toronto politicians. The school was opened Oct. 20, 1870, the public pomp of the occasion drawing on the presence of the lieutenant-governor and Ontario Premier J o h n Sanfield Macdonald. The original site has undergone many changes since that time. But, for the centennial, school authorities are hopeful to recapture something of the grar.dness of that first day. "We hope," says Mr. Demeza, "to make it as big and eventful an occasion as possible." OSD 1968 - Equipped Second to None !
