And my engine is being used to make it possible. Germany, France, Austria and Britain are all making ready to use my engine to fight each other. Even America may get into this awful thing." The fatal crossing In September 1913, Rudolf Diesel and his friend, George Carels, a director of the British Diesel Company, boarded the ferry steamer Dresden to cross the English Channel on their way to London. When Herr Doktor Diesel did not appear for breakfast the next morning, it was found that his stateroom had not been slept in. A thorough search found that his leather portfolio of papers was missing, and his hat and coat were found beneath a section of the afterdeck railing. What really happened to the great inventor that night has remained a baffling mystery. For various reasons, it was highly unlikely that the inventor committed suicide; police investigation failed to turn up a murderer or a motive. A legacy left to the world Some of Diesel's most brilliant designing was created in the last months of his life. Among those latest drawings were sketches of small engines suitable for driving bicycles, motorcycles and invalid wheel chairs. On the other hand, there were the very impressive drawings of giant engines sized to cover an entire city block, and standing more than 1000 feet tall. These monstrous engines, each more than 100 feet in bore (diameter) were clustered in batteries of five. In this group one could recognize an awareness of engines in the Space Age which Diesel and other scientists were already seeing in the future! While stationary power systems and the rocket required for space travel are not the same, the drawings suggested engines capable of producing many millions of horsepower - more than could imaginably be required for use on earth's surface. It is interesting to note that groupings of five giant engines with unified power concentration were developed to lift off the mighty Apollo-type rockets and missiles. At Space Age installations, one may see diesel power units being used at space tracking stations, at the consoles of space transmitters, and in various underground launching silos. In nearly every nation, on land, sea, or in the air, Diesel engines work for the benefit of mankind: pulling railroad trains, powering buses, trucks, tractors and heavy construction machinery. They power generators, help with air travel, propel ships - from the smallest fishing craft to the largest liners. They open roads, power factories, and help FAST LOCAL SERVICE to launch space vehicles. Truly, Diesel's engine is a world resource. R. F. HawarcL ES TEXTS OFFICE FURNITURE LTD.
