"Our video selection is growing, along with classical and self-help CDs and cassettes, as well as books on tape." Magazines have become one of their specialities and their reservation list is growing. Bill believes the downtown is still viable. There is open air, trees, and the river, whereas other shopping areas tend to be man-made. Here it is real. He also believes in supporting local business because they, in turn, support local trades people. "If the Quinte Mall were owned locally," he says, "the economy would be much better. If you spend a dollar at the mall in the morning it is in Toronto at suppertime". He adds, "If you spend a dollar in WalMart it will be in Arkansas just as fast!" Bill s philosophy is to run the best bookstore in Canada or ... the world! He believes that if they give the best service possible and are prudent with their expenditures they will do well. "A lot of our success is due to the staff we've had over the years. Some of our staff have stayed with us a relatively long time. Janet Brown and Beverley Boyce have been with us for thirteen years," says Bill. A few years ago they opened up the basement and filled it with quality bargain books -- great books at great prices. Dickens -- the orange and white store cat -- keeps an eye on everybody and everything, and can often be seen greeting people at the door or being carried around the store by one of his friends. "We have tried to create a welcoming atmosphere in the store and exist to help people." they conclude.
