i INFORMED SOURCES Commodore Jim Hughes dies at 51 Jim Hughes, Commodore ol the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club; Moira Secondary School coach and teacher died early today. He was 51, one day shy of his 52nd birthday. Hughes died at Belleville Gen- eral Hospital after being taken there by ambu- lance at about 3 a.m. Initial re- ports say he had an apparent heart attack at home. Immediate past Commodore Bruce Knutson said Hughes was an irreplaceable member of the Jim Hughes yacht club's executive and a tire- less worker during successive Waterfront Festival celebrations at Victoria Park. "With Gena, his wife, Jim was involved in just about everything we did at the yacht club," said Knutson. "I can hardly believe he's gone. It's just not going to be the same without him around the place." Hughes assumed the Commo- dore's post Dec. 1, 1993, and was in the first year of his term. He was vice commodore, member- ship chairman, house chairman and fleet captain for power craft at the BQYC in past years. He could frequently be found on his 28-foot Carver boat, Moon ShadL- ow. Hughes moved to Belleville in 1968, from Toronto, and began reaching here. He coached wres- tling at Moira Secondary School and taught physical education and science. He had been on medical leave or the past year due to a knee in- ury. Hughes and wife, Gena (Bell), lave one son, Scott, of Alberta. He is resting at John R. Bush funeral Home. Service will be Saturday, May 21, at 1 p.m. Fur- ther arrangements were to be an- nounced later.
