Former Belleville resident honored by engineers A former Belleville resi- dent, Robert H. Tanner, now of Naples, Florida, is the reci- pient of a major honor by the institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the largest profes- sional engineering society in the world. Established in 1971 in honor of Haraden Pratt, the award is presented annually to an IEEE senior member or fellow who has "given outstanding service to the in- stitute." Tanner is the first non U.S. citizen to receive the award, one of several key awards he has won over the years. Tanner has been a member of the IEEE since 1938 and during the time he worked for Nor thern Electr ic at Belleville (now Northern Telecom) he helped establish the Bay of Quinte Section of the IEEE. During his many years of ROBERT TANNER membership in the IEEE Tanner rose to the rank of president of the transnational organization in 1972. The in- stitute has more than 202,000 membersin 130 countries. A native of England, Tan- ner emigrated to Canada in 1947 and joined what was then Northern Electric. He later became one of the company's first three members in a new research and development division, later to become Bell- Northern Research. His engineering ac- complishments during his years in Canada include designing the Festival Theatre at Stratford, Ont. and the studios for Radio Sta- tion C JBQ in Belleville. This was done as a part time consulting practice in acoustics and noise control. He moved to Florida to establish a full-time con- sulting occupation in 1975.
