And for Ruth Tyner, Tuesday marked the end of a 34-year teaching career in Hastings County. Tyner, whose last 15 years have been spent at Harmony School near Foxboro, officially retires Thursday at noon-when all teachers in the public and separate school system begin their summer holidays. "Today (Tuesday) was my last day of teaching and I have mixed feelings about leaving. I am looking forward to a vacation but I have a few regrets about leaving the teaching profession. I'll miss the daily contact with the students," she said. "I enjoyed teaching, the challenges that come along every day. I certainly shall miss the students." Tyner said she's planning on "tak- ing it easy" this year. "I certainly plan visiting the school throughout the year. I won't be too far away," Tyner said. Students, though, may be far from their respective schools during the summer holidays. Classes are set to resume Sept. 4, a scant 76 days away. A special celebration highlighted the last day of school for Bayview Public School. The Dundas Street east school is closing its doors later this month after a 111-year history in Belleville. Shortly after 3 p.m., students, staff, friends and parents joined hands and made a circle in front of the school and sang Auld Lang Syne. More than 150 helium-filled balloons were then released into the air, a farewell reminder of the school's historical past in the city.
