d . er Cfc/. ///& P z •̂ ^--^ Former Black Diamond owner dies By Henry Bury THE INTELLIGENCER < The previous owner of Black Diamond Cheese Company and a former Belleville alderman has died in the Bahamas. Donald Joss died Sept. 28 in Nassau, where he had lived since selling Black Diamond Cheese in 1970. He was 75. "It's a sad day for Belleville to lose an outstanding businessman who grew Black Diamond into a successful large company that is still doing business today under a different name," said friend John O'Flynn, a former lawyer and judge. O'Flynn said he was informed of Mr. Joss' death via e-mail by one of his four daughters, Helen Knowles, also of the Bahamas. Mr. Joss was born and raised in Belleville. He attended McGill University in Montreal where he received a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1953 and met his future wife, Ann Hoopes. After the death of his father, Stanley Joss, Mr. Joss became president of the family-owned Black Diamond Cheese Compa- ny. He remained president of the company until selling it to Brooke Bond Ltd. in 1970. Mr. Joss was an alderman for the City of Belleville from 1964- 67. After selling the company, he retired and moved his family to Nassau, Bahamas. In the late 1980s, he served as Canadian consul. According to his daughter, Mr. Joss was known for his collection of classic automobiles. His most prized possessions were a 1930 Rolls Royce and 1952 Bentley. "Don was a great father. He always played an active role in the raising of his four daughters," Knowles said in an e-mail to O'Flynn. "Witli the purchase of 'Landfall', an older Bahamian home, he involved the entire fam- ily with the renovation. He taught his daughters the gift of hard work and the satisfaction of a job well done." Knowles said her father spent his weekends driving his Bentley or Rolls Royce to play golf with his friends. He loved his dog, Lad- die, and cat, Louie, and enjoyed spending his evenings feeding his turtle, Oscar. Mr. Joss is survived by Ann Joss, his wife of 52 years, four daughters, 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
