J ' Former mayor dies in Trenton ^i-rAsJiU A-> <3^J 1 / ̂ <J *"7/-x^ -T^fr* *"«* ^f^) TRENTON - Funeral was held today for Jim MacDonald, 74, a former mayor of Trenton during the 1960s. MacDonald died Wednesday in Trenton Memorial Hospital where he had been confined for some months after suffering a stoke in Florida. MacDonald was the mayor of Trenton from from 1960 to 1969. a period of intense economic activity in the city. He was instrumental in getting the northerly bridge on the Trent River built in 1967 and the structure was later named after him. He ran a prosperous hardware store on Dundas and Front Street in the city. That business was one of many destroyed in an arson fire which broke out in March, 1978. After his term as mayor he ran for and was elected to the Trenton Public Utilities Commission. He served as commission chairman and commissioner from 1973-1978. As mayor during Canada's Centennial, MacDonald played a major role in those celebrations. He also played an important role in helping to raise the money necessary to build the Trenton Community Gardens. He is survived by his wife, the former Irene (Rene) Pougnet, children, Michael and his wife Judy of Michigan. James and his wife. Susan of Richmond Hill, Ted and his wife Ellen of London, England. Doug and his wife Carol of Markham, brothers, Rev. Daniel MacDonald of Kingston. Kenneth MacDonald of Toronto, Edward MacDonald of Trenton, sisters. Rev. Sister Sara MacDonald of Belleville, Frances Truman, Marie Rose and Patricia Weston all of Trenton. Memorial donations can be made to the Trenton Memorial Hospital Building Fund or the Ontario Heart and Stoke Foundation. ( ( '
