Compactness the Key to Planned OSD Infirmary $335,000 Infirmary Slated for OSD The new Ontario School for the Deaf infirmary will offer convalescent students the finest in facilities including spacious bedrooms and a playarea day room for convalescing youngsters. The single story building, estimated to cost $335,000, was designed by Department of Public Works architects. Deadline for construction tenders is Nov. 4. A construction date will be set later. OSD Superintendent Joseph Demeza said Friday the infirmary will replace Gibson Hospital, erected in 1894. It will be linked by a heated corridor to the school's existing junior school and dormitory so that the youngest pupils will have direct and sheltered access during bad weather. "The infirmary has been a top priority need for several years," said Dr. Demeza, "particularly because of the age and two-floor construction of the Gibson Hospital which is not up to present safety and efficiency standards." The infirmary includes nine bedrooms with adjacent dayroom, a nursing station, offices for the school doctor and dentist, and examination rooms. Total floor area is 9,840 square feet. The bedrooms will accommodate 26 pupils and have washrooms attached. Plans call for comprehensive landscaping of the area surrounding the infirmary. The OSD infirmary staff includes three full-time nurses, a part - time nurse and four residence councillors who provide 24 - hour care for the school's 437 students. Seriously ill children will continue to be referred to Belleville General Hospital.
