14 - THE INTELLIGENCER, Tuesday, September 20,1994 Mavety is OHL's winningest active head coach The name Larry Mavety is synonomous with the Belleville Bulls. For 12 of his 14 OHL seasons, the league's winningest active coach has been with Belleville. During a two-year sojourn with the arch-rival Kingston Frontenacs (then known as Raiders), Mavety won OHL Coach-of-the-Year honors. He's compiled 413 wins against 402 losses and took the 1986 Bulls to the league final where they lost to the eventual Memorial Cup champion Guelph (now Owen Sound) Platers. Born in Woodstock, Mavety was raised in: Belleville where he starred in hockey and fastball. He carved a lengthy pro career as a hardnosed, steady defenceman, playing mostly in the minor leagues. During the 1970s with the now-defunct World Hockey Association, Mavety was a Second Team all-star with the Chicago Cougars, In the upstart WHA, Mavety played against some of hockey's best all-time performers including Mr. Hockey -- Gordie Howe -- and Bobby Hull. During hockey off-seasons, Mavety excelled as a fastball catcher and played in the World Championships on several occasions with Ontario teams. Marc Massicotte is among a new breed of hockey trainers known as physical therapists. A graduate of a special diploma course at Sheridan College in Oakville, Massicotte joined the Bulls from the Sudbury Wolves and is heading into his third season with Belleville. Massicotte relies heavily on assistant trainer Chris Rutledge, a Belleville native who was a standout lacrosse player in bis high school days.
