While customers may call it wrapper or bags for snacks and many other consumer goods, Mobil people call it "oriented polypropylene." The material comes off in huge steady sheets at 200 metres per minute. The "oriented" part of the official name simply means it is "stretched" - - both directions, said Nolan. From pellet sized resin, much of which is sourced in Canada, a liquid mixture is formulated to a patented formula called an "engineered resin." That is then extruded by sophisticated produc- tion equipment into a thin film which is stretched, annealed (heat treated) coated (with protective barrier solutions) or metallized. In some cases the wide rolls are slit to size before shipped to customers directly from the plant's own warehouse. The bulk of the product is actually exported, and of further interest, "85 per cent of our waste is recycled into product," said Nolan.
