"It's really a darn nice place if they'd realize it." Belleville has been good to her. She has a basement containing 30 bowling trophies from her days with women's and mixed leagues. A visitor asked if she was a good bowler. "I guess I must be," she said, after a few seconds. "As I said, I have 30 trophies downstairs." She also learned to swim and dive at the YMCA in Toronto and continued those endeavours here. Gardening, particularly of the vegetable variety, has been a source of pleasure. "Nothing like fresh peas off the vine," Campbell said. Charlie died of a heart attack 12 years ago and the hip has slowed Ev down. Her daughter Val Day is a nurse at Belleville hospital and she takes her mom out for shopping and other pursuits. These days Ev watches TV, including nature programs on the Discovery Channel and game shows -- her favourite is The Price is Right. "I can't stand Bob Barker," she confessed. "He insults people and thinks it is funny. But I like the show." She is also a fan of crosswords and murder mysteries -- the old-time favourites like Agatha Christie where there is no profanity. But her favourite pursuit i^ making finger puppets. "I'm still doing my finger puppets," she said. "I'm up to 3,100 now." She provides them to the auxiliary, and then they are distributed to child patients at no charge. The puppets are also given to nurse Pat Soucy, who takes them into native reserves in Northern Ontario for distribution to the youngsters there. "The kids love them up there." She can't recall where she got the idea to make the puppets. "I must have seen it someplace." She will move to a retirement home in Niagara Falls eventually and that will put her closer to most of her 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. But for now, she will remain in her home, although that fact causes her to repeat an earlier lament. "I'm going nuts crawling around the house."
