The Bayside resident is the ne\\ com- modore of the yacht club located in V i c t o r i a Park. Formed in 1876 and now boast ing I 81! members, it is the second oldest yacht c lub in Canada behind only the Ro\al Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto. Fawson is only the second female com- modore in the club's history. Susan Smi th broke the al l-male t r a d i t i o n in 191)1 by becoming the f i r s t woman commodore. "I respect Susan for being the f i r s t lady commodore. She had a lot of opposition from ( l i e male members but she overcame the obstacles and she was a good com- modore. 1 hope I can fol low in her foot- steps and do the posi t ion proud,1 ' Fawson said. The ~>8-\ ear-old bookkeeper received a special g i f t from Smith a f te r she was acclaimed commodore earlier th i s month. It is a commodore's hat presented to Smith by the late Bridget Richards who brought it back from Fngland. "I w i l l p roudly wear the commodore's hat at the sail past June 18 to mark the official opening of the boating season. Now we just have to get through the w i n t e r without our boat," she said w i t h a big smile. Boat ing has been impor tan t for Fawson and her husband, B i l l , for the past two decades. The self-employed bookkeeper said boat ing is an ideal way "to escape from crunching numbers all day." The couple owns a 3 5 -foot Chris Craf t Roamer, a t r awle r - type cruiser w i t h a steel hul l and powered by twin 165-horsepower gas engines. They have gone on many trips up the Trent-Severn V\ 'a terway as far as Buckhorn as well as around the Thousand Islands. Their vessel travels "comfortably" at eight to 10 knots per hour. "We enjoy puttering along to wherever we're going. We're usual ly not in a rush to get there," she laughed.
