That chance came on Nov. 15 of last season when Bulls coach and general manager Larry Mavety swung a deal to bring Bailey to Belleville. "Mav gave me an opportunity to play here. I didn't have much confidence in myself until he came along. He picked me up and showed me the ropes and showed he believed in me," says Bailey. Before working at the Bulls annual hockey school Bailey spent the summer working out at a YMCA near Port Stanley and working at a hockey school oper- ated by NHL defenceman Doug Grossman. He has one-half semester left at Quinte Secondary School be- fore receiving his Grade 12 di- ploma. With Belleville projected to be a much younger team this sea- son, Bailey knows he and fellow veteran Rick Marshall will be ex- pected to take more responsibil- ity on the blueline. "This is Rick's third year too and we've got some good young guys coming back. Well miss Mc- Carty and Gretzky and those guys, but I think we can adjust," says Bailey. In fact, 218 of the 314 goals Belleville scored last season have been lost to graduation. "If he has to, Mav will prob- ably make a deal to get us some scoring," Bailey chuckles. He heads to the Habs training camp Sept. 5. NOTES - Bailey is one of sev- eral players teaching at the Belleville Bulls hockey school.
