1 Pat Glancey He agreed education has changed over the years since he was a student at Nicholson. "You did your work, you behaved," he said. "There were certain expectations. It's changed dramatically." Th£ dynamics of family have changed and it is "far more complex" today, as is society compared to the "black and white" situation in years gone by. But he said change was good if it was structured. Glancey said he has worked hard at being able to relate to today's students. "Probably my greatest strength has been the ability to connect with kids." As he walks the halls this day, students seem to back his contention, singing out an unsolicited "Hi, Mr. Glancey" as he pass- es. He is retiring now because it feels right. "It's time for a change," he said. But Glancey said he hoped he wmild be wel- comed back to coach basketball. He is married to Patricia and they have two girls. Colleen is an English teacher at a Kingston high school, while Stephanie does the same at an Ottawa secondary school. Colleen is going to have the Glancey's first grandchild, due around Christmas, and Stephanie will be married in Belleville, July 22. "They both wrent to school here (Nicholson)," Glancey said. "Never once in five years did I have to speak to them about anything." The entire family golfs, with the Glanceys, their daughters and spouses heading for Williamsburg, Va., every year. » He watches television, mostly sports, but also CSI and Cold Case. Perhaps surprising for an educator, Glancey said he does not do a lot of read- ing. However, Glancey said he would read a retirement book he purchased. He conceded it was not easy to leave Nicholson. "I'm going to miss the kids. I am going to miss the teachers. I am going to miss the parents." Glancey said he did his best to be fair to everyone. "I have tried to treat kids and staff the way they would want to be treated (and I) had a genuine feeling for them. You can have an influence." Contact Barry Ellsworth at: newsroom@intelligencer.ca
