av Special dedication to Samuel Greene monument June 11 The fund-raising campaign to restore the monument ,to Samuel Greene at the Belleville Cemetery will wrap up with a dedication ceremony there June 11. Last year the project was launched because of concerns of the Ontario Association of the Deaf about the state of the monument. Greene was Ontario's first deaf teacher and was co- founder and first president of the Ontario Deaf-Mute Associa- tion (now the Ontario Associa- tion of the Deaf). The Belleville Association of the Deaf, headed up by presi- dent Gerard Kennedy, took on the restoration project at the request of the provincial group. When Greene died in 1890 deaf and hearing friends erect- ed a tall, pink granite monu- ment with limestone base at the cemetery. The restoration group has raised $7,000 to restore and repair the monument. A new commemorative plaque is also being installed. Dedication ceremonies are set for 1:30 p.m. June 11. f\ Oh- <
