\) On campus Loyalist graduate honored By Mary Jane Breault President, Loyalist College Alumni Assoc. Georgina Thompson, president of All-Care Health Services and Thurlow Township councillor, has received a Premier's Award for outstanding achievement as a college graduate. Thompson graduated from the nursing pro- gram at Loyalist in 1978. Pre- mier Bob Rae presented the award at the provincial confer- ence for the Association of Col- leges of Applied Arts and Tech- nology earlier this month. The Premier's Awards were es- tablished in 1992 in honor of the college sys- tem's 25th anni- versary. Four provincial awards are pre- sented each year to one graduate in the areas of Applied Arts, Business, Health Sciences, and Technology. Th- ompson received the Premier's Award for the outstanding gradu- ate in Health Sciences. In recog- nition of this honor, a bursary of $5,000 will be given to Loyalist to establish an award for students in the college Nursing program. After graduating from Loyal- ist, Thompson worked as a regis- tered nurse at Belleville General Hospital until 1981, and then formed All-Care Health Services -- a nursing and home support agency that operates in Belleville, Napanee and King- ston. She has also chaired the Re- gional Hospice of Quinte, and was an active board member un- til 1992. She continues to work part-time as a Registered Nurse at Trenton Memorial Hospital, / and as a consult- ant to Plainfield Children's Home. Thompson was appointed to the Board of Governors of Loyalist College in 1990, and was elected vice- chairman of the board in 1993. She is a member of the Sidney 9. 37. Georgina Thompson Rotary Club, and has served as a councillor for Thurlow Township since 1988. She is an executive member of the Ontario Palliative Care Association, and also chairs the Centre and South Hastings Recycling Board. Thompson has many other community and pro- fessional commitments. As a member of the nominat- ing committee, I know it's very difficult to decide on only one graduate in each of the four areas of Business, Applied Arts, Health Sciences and Technology -- that's a challenge in itself. In fact, we have many, many outstanding graduates from our programs at Loyalist. But in the end, we agreed that Thompson was a wonderful role model and repre- sentative of our graduates in the Health Sciences area. We de- scribed her as an "outstanding example of the adult who lives lifelong learning. Georgina came to Loyalist in September 1976 as an adult learner who successfully and with great enthusiasm jug- gled the roles of wife, mother, worker and student. During her three years at Loyalist, Georgina impressed everyone with her boundless energy, organizational skills and determination to suc- ceed. Her endless enthusiasm continues in her professional and community commitments. Re- cently she was named the 1994 chair of the United Way Cam- paign in the Quinte area, another example of her dedication to her community." We're very proud of our gradu- ates, and we're pleased that Th- ompson has been recognized with this significant provincial award for her contributions. Congratu- lations Georgina, from your Alumni Association. /9W.
