Mervin Thompson Intell compositor Died: Oct. 12 A longtime employee of The Intelligencer has lost his battle with cancer. Mervin Thompson died Oct. 12 surrounded by his family in his County Road 28 home. He was 64. Mr. Thompson spent 34 years with The Intelligencer, both as a printer and compositor. He left in 1991 after the company down- sized the operation. Nine years ago, Mr. Thompson and Betty, his wife of 40 years, opened the Harbourview Cafe on South Pinnacle Street. They had to close the restaurant in February because of his failing health. "He loved waiting on tables and entertaining the customers," she said. "It wouldn't have been the success it was without Merv. The atmosphere was so fun with him." Fred Soule, who spent 49 years with The Intelligencer, remembers Mr. Thompson as "a hell of a good guy" and a practical joker. "He just liked to laugh... to pull jokes on you if he could." Fred Stickle, another former Intell employee, also recalled Mr. Thompson's humour. "He was a great kidder and he just thought so well of everyone," he said. Mr. Thompson is survived by three children, Steven (Michelle) of Ameliasburgh, Mark (Tara) of Nashville and Heather (Todd) Cook of London, Ont, two brothers, Lyle and Donald, and five grandchil- dren.
