Dies In 81st Year Former chief clerk with the Canadian National Railways, Belleville Division, Newton Thompson, 255 George Street died suddenly at home early today. He was in his 81st year. Born at Deseronto, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Thomp- son, Mr. Thompson attended Ontario Business College and worked as a bookkeeper at the former McGee Plumbing Shop on Front Street before joining the accountancy de- partment of CN. Mr. Thompson was chief clerk at the Belleville CN di- vision for, approximately 20 years. He retired in June, 1957. Keenly interested in t h e work of the YMCA Mr. Thomp- son was a former president of the Belleville Y and was the first president of the Belleville Y's Men's Club. He was also the first president of the International Y' Men's Club from Canada in 1929-30. Mr. Thompson was a mem- ber of Bridge Street United Church where he was an eld- der and former chairman of the board of managers as well as church treasurer. He was a member of the Belleville Red Cross, acting as the Society treasurer for some years and also belonged to the Belleville Rotary Club. During the heyday of the Cen- tral Ontario Baseball League back in the 1920s Mr. Thomp- son acted as secretary of the COBL and travelled regularly with the Belleville G r a n d Trunks and Nationals in their quest for provincial baseball honors. He was a member of Eure- ka Lodge AF and AM. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, the former Fran- ces Strong, a foster daugh- ter Mrs. William (Maureen) Jacobs of Ottawa, and two sisters, Mrs. Sherry (Mary) DeMille of Shannonville and Mrs. Wilfred (Hazel) Miller of Napanee.
