TV, OV-Y- Area dentist receives top international award A Quinte-area dentist, Dr. William Thompson has been honored by his international colleagues with the highest award available through the World Dental Federation. The award I was formally presented at the Federa- I tion's recent congress held at Vancouver, involving 14,000 partici- pants from more than 90 countries, and rated as the Dr. William Thompson largest convention ever held in Vancouver. Thompson also becomes only the second Canadian named to the World Dental Federation's List of Honour. He had been nominated to the list after be- 'ing elected a life member of the federation's General Assembly. "In the world of dentisty, it's about as high as you can get,11 commented Dr. Thompson. "I think it's great to be honored by your confreres from other coun- tries as well as from your own country." Born at Campbellford, Dr. Thompson had a distinguished career with Canada's armed forces during the Second World War. He received his dental de- gree from the University of Tor- onto in 1949 and graduated as a captain in the Royal Cana- dian Dental Corps, later named Canadian Armed Forces Direc- tor General of Dental Services in 1976. He retired from the military in 1982 and the same year be- came president of the Canadian Dental Association. He became involved with the Federation Dentaire Interna- tionale (World Dental Federa- tion) in 1972 and held various offices over the past 22 years. f
