PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Top volunteer wins Carswell award ByRICKHOBBS Staff Reporter TRENTON A retired teacher and former chairman of the board of Trenton Memorial Library has been named the 1990 volunteer citizen of the vear by the city's Lions Club. Ethel Toolev accepted the award at a meeting of the club, Thursday. It is named the Val Carswell Award, after a member who donated thousands of hours to the community. Bill Dafoe, chairman of the committee which selected the winner, said Tooley served for many years with the Trenton branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. She served as vice- president, secretary; campaign chairperson for five years, helped organize the first curl for cancer, was a driver for cancer patients for many year and also canvassed for the society. She has also been active in the active fund raiser and served as district director for three years. Tooley was a teacher for 37 years before retiring. Since her retirement she has become ac- tive in the Ontario Association of S u p e r a n n u a t e d W o m e n Teachers Tooley has been a member of the Trenton Community Concert Association for 21 years and acted as campaign chairperson for several years. As a member of King Street United Church, she served on its board for 13 years. She was the president of the United Church Women for two years and has been Belleville Presbytery's representative for the UCW at the Bay of Quinte Conference. After listening to Dafoe extoll her many virtues, Tooley joked, to an appreciative crowd, that "I never realized just what a wonderful person I was." She is the fourth winner of the Val Carswell award and she said Professional she feels she she is now part of Women's club where she was an "an illustrious group of four."
