The fatal shooting sparked an angry protest, involving about 100 people, outside the office of the UN policing mis- sion in the eastern Bosnian town Foca. Two staff members were injured during the demon- stration, prompting the evacua- tion of the office, a UN spokes- woman said. Soldiers from the NATO Sta- bilization Force opened fire on Gagovic's car during a planned detention operation near Foca, NATO spokesman Glenn Cham- berlain said. The French Defence Ministry in Paris later confirmed the troops involved were French. Several other people in the car'with Gagovic were not seri- ously hurt in the incident and were cared for by French mili- tary medical personnel. Cham- berlain said the passengers were children and teenagers. The French ministry said in a statement a doctor was pre- sent at the time of the shooting and noted Gagovic died instant- ly. Chamberlain said the inci- dent was unfortunate but unavoidable and the soldiers were acting in self-defence.
