Van de Water Named 'CN's Chief Engineer George A. Van de Water, formerly manager of Cana- dian National's Rideau Area, here, has been appointed the company's system, chief engin- eer with headquarters in Montreal. In his new position, Mr. Van de Water, 48, will be respons- ible for the design, construc- tion, operation and mainten- a ance of GN's huge fixed plant. This includes some 24,000 males of main line track. IT ore than 6?000 bridges, 72 tunnels and hundreds of railway build- ings. Since joining CN in Belle- ville in 1951, he has served the railway in a number ol engineering and managerial roles. • A graduate of Queen's Uni- versity, he held several engin- eering department positions before becoming division en- gineer at Belleville in 1958. In 1964 CN named him pro- ject manager, responsible for the engineering aspects of the large Place Bionaventure com- plex in Montreal. He subse- quently co-ordinated the rail- way relocation project at Ot- tawa, including organizational and operating arrangements with CPR. He returned to Belleville in 1968 as operations manager and two years later became Manager of CN's Rideau Area. Prior to his appointment as system chief engineer, Mr. Van de Water was manager of express and intermodal services for the railway's Great Lakes Region in Toronto. T
