After 10 years of service, Andrew Jarvis, a Scotsman who has on occasion arrived at council wearing his kilt, retired as town clerk in early February. He previously held the position of town councillor for 16 years. Prior to his political career which began in 1945, he worked for Ontario Hydro, did some work as a plumber and served in the ar- my for three yeslrs. Although he has retired, Jarvis remarked, "I'd like to keep in touch with town coun- cil, but I'm not sure what I'll do." Taking over as town clerk, is G r a h a m Lodge, of Kingston, who also attended the dinner. As a token of appreciation, Jarvis received a set of lug- gage from Don King, mayor of Picton, and Mrs. Bessie Ward, deputy-mayor. On behalf of the people, Reeve Richardson bestowed upon the guest of honor, three anti- que volumes of Sir Walter Scott's History of Scotland. Prior to the dinner, James Taylor, MPP for Prince Edward-Lennox' presented Jarvis with a copy of the original act establishing the town of Picton in 1837. A man of philosophies, the former town clerk, in reply to the head-table speeches, said, "There are three persons; the person you think you are, the one people think you are, and the real person." "I think I've learned something from the contact I've had with everyone here tonight," he said later, refer- ring to himself as "a sort of intellectual parasite," Deputy-Reeve Richard Byers remarked, "Perhaps if we had more guys like Andy in towns and cities, they'd be in better shape." Guests at the head table in- cluded: Mayor Donald King; Jack Ward, town solicitor; Jack Wells, warden; Larry Richardson, reeve.
