Macklem Presented With Painting Last night at the Golden Acre Inn, Kingston Road, 60 people, members of the South Hastings Educational Association, met to pay tribute to the founder of that organization, Mr. R. H. Macklem, inspector of South Hastings pub- lic schools. Mr. E. R. Valcamp, vice-presi- dent of the organization, acting as chairman, told of the formation of the Association ten years ago, stating that it was an organiza- tion that had sponsored conser- vation, music festivals, public speaking contests, and scholar- ship awards. He referred to the work of Inspector Macklem in the public schools, his connection with the Film Councils, and other adult organizations. On behalf of the Association, Mr. Valcamp presented Mr. Mack- lem with a painting depicting a rural scene near Halloway, the work of the Canadian artist, Man- ly Macdonald. THANKS TENDERED In his reply, Mr. Macklem thanked each person present, drawing to the attention of his listeners some of the means by which he would carry the mem- ories of the association with him. Mr. Roscoe Robson, MLA for East Hastings, spoke of his asso- ciations with Mr. Macklem and referred to the expanding school population, which brought with it problems of new classrooms, and of providing educational advant- ages for the elementary school pupils. Colonel Roscoe Vanderwater re- called pioneer conditions in his own school section and contrasted them with conditions today. He referred to the fact that 100 years ago a farmer had been a public school inspector, and that his pa- ternal grandmother had been sub- jected to an oral examination be- fore commencing to teach. Mr. Li. A. Kells, superintendent of education in Belleville public schools, spoke of his associations with Mr. Macklem and went on to say that the organization of which Mr. Macklem was the founder, was at the time of its inception the only one to embrace trustees, teachers, ratepayers, and councillors.
