City girl in eastern Ontario beauty contes "^xv i9\ 7 By HARRY MULHALL Staff Reporter Kandi McElary is bidding for the Miss Eastern Ontario Pageant title--a contest win which leads directly into the national spotlight. Belleville's centennial Queen during the city's 1978 big birthday celebrations, 18-year-old Kandi joins 37 other young women contesting the pageant at Perth, Friday night. The winner of the eastern Ontario event automatically goes to next year's Miss Dominion of Canada contest. But, between times, it's a busy year, says Effie Buchanan, pageant co-ordinator. The winner at Perth spends much time at special events throughout the region-participating in parades, fairs, of- ficial openings of various projects and other special events, said the co-ordinator. And, aside from the conventional crown, the pageant this year also means prizes worth about $4,000 to the win- ner, she estimated. These include furs and jewelry. The pageant official couldn't recall when there was a contestant from Belleville-in an event that covers a region down to the Quebec-Ontario border and north to North Bay. Kandi's entry is being sponsored by city automotive dealer Motorland Chrysler. Al Lyons, Motorland president, also does business in Perth and said this is the second year he's been approach- ed by pageant organizers to sponsor a contestant from the city.
