Wilson says goverilm--ent will fund switch to rehab By MIKE KOWALSKI Free Press Staff Writer Whitby General Hospitai's future as a rehiabilitation treatment centre may be coming dloser 10 being a reality. Ontario Health Minister Jim Wilson this week reaffirmed his support of a controversial proposai to convert the hospital into a rehiabilitation centre serving ail of Durham Region. Wilson also indicated, that the government is prepared to fund the estimated $24.I1-million cost of transforming the 28-year-old 'Gordon Street hospital into a. state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility. "I've been consistent on that ail along," MWilson told reporters at Fairview Lodge on Monday following his announcement of $8.1I million in long-term health care funding for the region (see separate story). "The Durham Health Council has recommended a rehab role for Whitby and we'Il now see what the Heaith Services Restructuring Commission recommeènds," lie said. (The commission mýet with area hospital officiais last week and wili release its report on the health council's proposed regional hospital system for Durham later this year.) Wilson stressed that he didflot want. to interfere with the governme 'nt-appointed commission 's deliberations, but reiiïerated his belief that the rehabilitation proposai lis ideal for Whitby. "Whitby has an opportunity -to be the best (rehiabilitat ion centre) in the world and we're willing to put money in," he said. "This is an exciting opportunity for Whitby, if they (residents) want to embrace it." According to the three-year-old health counicil study on Durham's future acute care needs, Whitby residents needing surgery and other inpatient services would travel to expanded hospitals in Oshawa and Ajax. The study states that emergency and some outpatient services could be accomodated, but does not guarantee it.> Please Recycle [This Newspaper!
