The teachers voted 85.6 percent in favour of a strike and 95.6 percent in favour of rejecting the boards lat- est contract offer, with 362 of 400 teachers eligible vot- ing on both questions. Despite the decisive vote, "we would like to get a settie- ment," says Tony White, president of the Durham secoridary unit of the On- tario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA). "'We certa inly don't want to use the strike mandate... and would hope to strike a deal in the near future." Union negotiators are ar- ranging a meeting with the board, he says, and what happens next wiII 'depend on the outcome. 1"We want to see what happens with the board first (before setting a dead- line); see what kind of at- mosphere we're going to be able to create... "If things look promising, we may continue to meet with the board; however if things begin to drag on and on and on, then obviously we're going to have to be in a position where we can use our mandate to increase the pressure on the board." Strike committees are be- ing prepared, says White, adding "we're not sitting back on our strike mandate and doing nothing about it.... "People are going into ac- tion and doing various ac- tivities to set up for the eventuality of a strike if necessary.
