Whi- bley and John Harte saw Whitby cruise into the second round of this knockout competition. Jack Wilson Park was the venue for the Wolfpack's home opener the following Monday night against West rouge and the team didn't disappoint taking the game 8-1 to stay joint top of the league on markers from Emo (3), Thompson, Greiss, Vito Rosinni, Jamie Del Mastro and Kristian Halikias after some very strong midfield work from Rob. Major Mosquitoes win four-in a row By PATRICIA THIEBAUD Special to The Free Press In league action last week, Whitby - Chiefs came away with four con- secutive wins. May 20 saw Whitby Major Mos- quitoes up against Clar- ington for a 25- 4 win. Whitby stole a total of 28 bases and winning pitcher Jonathan Thie- baud shared the mound with Kenny Henry, Brent Hodge and Imran Mo- hammed. In a match against Peterborough Rep on May 23 both teams held tight defen- sively until the 4th inning when Whitby's Kyle Cos- tello belted out a double followed by a single each off the bats of Craine, Hannan, Healy, Meadows and two for Hodge. Bula took the mound to start followed by Moham- med in relief and Leva closing. Mohammed took the pitching win for Whitby. Belleville, too fell to defeat by a score of 23-2 on May 24. Along with 23 scored runs, Whitby stole 20 bases and chalked up 19 RBI'S. Pitchers Thiebaud, Henry, Novia, Hodge and Meadows shared the mound. The fourth and final game of the week saw the Chiefs face Kingston on May 25 with Bula start- ing for 3 innings followed by Mohammed, then Leva for the close. Single runs were scored by Costello, Hannan and Henry with double runs scored by Craine, Healy and Thiebaud. Hannan, Healy and Thiebaud each hit singles while Meadows blasted out a double and a single ringing up two· RBI'S along with Hannan for two RBI'S. Whitby finished the game in the 7th winning 9-1 with Peter Bula the winning pitcher. Peewees edged for toumey title Wolverine Select Mosquitoes win openers i Whitby Wolverines Ma- jor Mosquito Select team won 10-5 and 19-4 over Os- hawa in opening games of the regular season last Sunday The double header opened with Oshawa tak- ing a one run lead in the first inning, only to have the Wolverines explode for eight runs in the second. Excellent hitting by Pay Ryan, Bradley Babb, Kyle Mitchell, Josh Clinton and Jeff Kingdon combined with stelar base running by Kent Howe, Ian Smart and Paul Pascuzi contributed to the eight run rally. Exceptional pitching by Kent Howe and Rob For- rester early in the game shut down Oshawa's of- fence. Speedy base stealing by Ryan Blades and Shawn Trail combined with con- sistent pitching by Pas- cuzzi thwarted Oshawa rallies in the fourth and six innings. David Sebok closed out the seventh in- ning by striking out all three Oshawa batters to .0-5, 19-4 cap a 10-5 victory for the Whitby team. The second game saw coaches. Rob Forrester, Dan Mitchell and Rick Trail use some of the rookie members of the team in key positions. Pat Ryan caught several strong innings while pitch- ers David Sebok, Bradley Babb and Jeff Kingdon, combined for 10 strike outs to lead the team to a lop- sided 19-4 win Babb also homered in the first inning which gave Whitby and early 3 run lead. Ian' Smart's 3 for 3 game with 2 RBI combined with Kingdon's 5 RBI de- molished Oshawa's chances in the second and third innings. Swift base stealing by Shawn Trail and Kent Howe added to the offence to give pitchers Sebok and Kingdon the win-and save respectively. The Wolver- ines are looking forward to next week's game against Pickering. Whitby began the Ajax tournament this weekend with a slow start. Whitby's first morning game was against Ajax los- ing by a score of 8-3. The first afternoon game was against Peterborough and Whitby was able to se- cure a good lead for a final score of 13-3. The semi-finals were on Sunday. Whitby played against the Ajax Major Peewee Selects and won by a score of 20-4 advancing Whitby to the final champi- onship game against Peterborough. The final games was a nail biter up until the 7th inning a few hits by Peter- borough to center field and a pitching change allowed Peterborough to gain a six lead run. Whitby at their final at bats were unable to make up the lost runs losing the championship game by a fi- nal score of 7-2. Whitby played a good team tournament. The team is coached by Randy Simpson, Don Cun- ningham, Bill Wallace and Murray Bowler. The Whitby team mem- bers are Kevin Wallace, Scott Bird, Jeff Freeman, Jason Gordon, Sean Cun- ningham, Kyle Simpson, Derrek Junkin, Mike Melissis, Brad Harden, Chris Bowler, Brent Chaschowy and Robert Cybulska.
