WHI3TBY FREE PRESS, Wednesday, July 28th, 1971, Page 17 FREE PRESS CARRIER OF THE WEEK Meet 12-year-old Kevin Murphy of Mitchell Street Brooklin, our carrier of the week. K e v i n, benefactor of the cartoon below, also likes to play the guitar. He spends a good deal of his time these long summer afternoons sketch- ing cartoon characters and trying their accompanying pun lines out on his family. The Murphys will1 vouch that some of Kevin's s t a t e m ents can be pretty startling. For instance, when he was asked w h y h i s cartoons depicted so many cobwebs, he automatically re- p I ied - "Guess I'm jus t hung up on spider webs just now.' Kevin does an excellent job del- ivering the Free Press up in the Mit- che ll1 Street area of Brooklin, and once while he was under the weather, his dad delivered the papers to every house along Kevin's route. YoungKevin also has a pretty sis- ter, Karen, who was runner up in the County Town Carnival Queen Pageant. REEVE PUTS DOWN NEW MUNICIPAL BUILDING Chamber will echo 112mnths out O the year In a fluent put-down, Reeve Tom Edwards denounced the Rossland R o a d m u n i c i pal-police complex be cause of the elaborate propor- tions of its council chamber, and for what he termed the "unneces- sary"expense in its construction. "Wedon'tneedaballroom", said t h e r e e v e in opening discussion after a motion was put forward by Councillor K. C. Hobbs inviting the tendersof all major local contrac- tors for complex construction. Reeve Edwards said it was his understanding that construction of the new building and turning the old offices over to the library would. mean an estimated cost of less than $900, 000, but now the cost was in creased by the building of a council1 chamber I a r g e e nough to use for public functions. "Are we going into competition againstourselves"?, heasked, re- minding council that it had just com- p 1 e t e d Heydenshore Pavilion for large functions which would serve the same purpose as- had been in- tended for the new council cham- bers. Although in agreement with the need for the new complex because of the inadequate space presently affprded the town police, and the p u b I i c requiring their services, the reeve voiced disapproval of the 5, 000square feet arrived at for the new council chamber. Oshawa, as municipally ambit- ous as any has a council chamber with less than 3, 000 square feet, he c o n t i n u ed, adding that i t was beyond him why the Town of Whitby, required 5,000 square feet for a council of Il plus staff, when the chamber was only used by the public on two occasions, on nomination* night and during the County Town Carnival Weekend. Expressing chagrin that he was one council member who had or ig- inally vo te d against reducing the size of the council chamber, he said: "I feel very guilty about my involvement at all, and would like to w i t h d r aw my support from the whole project'. The go-ahead on calling local tenders was decided in a 5-3 re- corded vote.
