DOCTOR HOBBS... PARKS ARE FOR PEOPLE Rec. department chasing lovers out of Whitby parks Duffers w il1 not be barred entry to the town parks. . . if the "sporting councillor", Kenneth C. Hobbs has anything to do with it, that is. Councillor Hobbs, whowas spontaneous in comment when Rec- r e a t i o n D i rector Gerry Gelette pointed out that golf balls left behind in Peel and Centennial Parks are safety hazards when the Department rotary mower is being used to cut park grass, regaled fellow coun- cillors w ith his fiîippant retort Mon- day night. "Well, we've gotten rid of the snowmobiles and the mini bikes - pretty soon it will be the lovers", he exclaimed. Hecontinuedon, torelatea hyp- ethetical i n s t a n ce of two senior c i t i z ens in one of the town parks~ citing: 'Can't golf here!' - 'Can't bring your mini bike!' "Sure ly we can set off some area for park golfing", he said on a more serious note. His suggestion was supported by fel low councillor Robert Attersley, w h o s e r ecommendation to al lot a portion of the parks for the golfers wouldalso curb the safety hazards referred to by Mr. Gelette. Council tabled thematterandwill pursue it again at the next general meeting. -EADR RT Madam; In answer to your article on themem- bers of council, I would I i k e to set the r e cord stra- ight, and I would also like toseeMr. Jim Munro get his facts before he starts making any c omm e n ts of the de f e ated candid- ates. I would I ike to r e m ind Mr. Mun- roe that I did not "fade into the background" after I was defeated, but i n s t ead I offered my services to the new council. I was appointed on the harbour commiss- ion in January, 19- 70, and since then I was cal led upon to attend one meet- ing. If that's ail the council needs, Iam sure that I can be of b e t ter service to the town. May- be it is because I don'tfit inwith the kind of crowd we have on council. Maybe it is because I am involved in the labour movement, or maybe because I am a member of the work ing class. I don't 1ike to sound bitter about WHITBY FREE PRESS, Wednesday, Jul.y 28th, 1971 Page 3 ditorial- t's County Tow n Carn iva The atmosphere of the County Town is electricwith anticipation as the days move closer to the Sixth Annual County Town Carnival, the municipal iti y's social event of the year. Downtown, the core merchants in- dustriously prepare for their charm- ing open-table sidewalk sale, Satur- day, July 31st. Patient hands work with flowers, paint and gay crepe paper streamers to prepare carnival floats for Satur- day's colourful street parade. Caterers pore sol icitously over long menus for toothsome banquets and buffets. Workmen add the finishing touches at the new Heydenshore Park Pavilion, which fo r t he first time on Friday, July30th, open its doors to the public for the Kiwanis barbecue. S u m m e r garden roses are being t e n d e d wi th care in preparation for the carnival flower show. People can almost taste those Sun- day morning Rotary pancakes enhanced t h e w h ole thing, but wh en council decides that a man whohad no time to run for office is chosen to take over a man who had of- feredhis services something smells, and I can assure you that some council members in no w a y wanted me among them. When the next election comes around, however, I can also assure you that my ser- vices are going to be available again for the voters who hope that their el- ected representa- tives are doing their jobs. Yours Truly, Eddy Cauchi, 921 Bayview, Whitby. Ti me by the fresh breeze off Lake Ontario, and the young lads down on Pi tt Street can barely sleep these nights in anti- cipation of the "carny'", with all its candy floss and brightly painted rides.
