RUDDY HOSPITAL WITH THE BUILT IN FUTURE A m o s t impres sive education-in- modernity c an be found right here in Whitby at the Doctor Joseph O. Ruddy General - the hospital with the built- in future. Operating now in minature, by com- parison to the vital role it will play with the town's ineviatable expansion, the J. O. Ruddy boasts some of the most modern equipment available in the world of medicine today, and with the go-ahead signal, can expand five times i t s p r e s e n t bed si ze in a matter of weeks. Built-in panels at the end of the cor- r idor on the lower faoor can be knocked out for instant horizontal expansion. The hospital roof when constructed in the late fall of '69 was designed in such a w a y , that three floors can be added to the existing four levels and disruption even at the top level would be minimal if at all. 16-bed units feature electronically control 1 ed beds. Each bed has the latest bed-patient panel with several radio stations, remote control tel evis- ion ana an intercom system connected to the main switchboard. The two n u r s ing stations on each e v e 1 a r e strategically structured, s o m ew h a t like wheel hubs with bed s e c t io ns b a s icaIly running off 1ike hub-spokes for cut-down on time loss and working space. A dream t h a t w a s a quarter of a century in real i zation, the Ruddy Gen- eral is bedded on a rather novel con- cept. nstead of the prototype "hospital- look", its glamourous interior much resembles that of a fine hotel. Picturesque Lake Ontario can be seen in any season from windows fac- ing south and northeast. The hospital cafeteria, which is opento visitors, is as bright and cheerful as a shopper's cafe. Special p a i n s are also taken i n the preparation of the food. "When someone is in bed recuper- ating , there's not much to interest himbut the food, so it must be just so", explains Administrator R. A. C. Rennie. The eastern side of the second foor is a f ui l 1y -equipped maternity ward. Mr. Rennie has applied to the Ontario Hospital Commission to open the fac- ility. It is not felt by the Commission at t h i s t ime, that the Whitby yearly birth rate is sufficient to compete with the Oshawa General. 600 births per annum is the estimated number of del- iveries to make the ward an economic venture. Che s t X-r a y equipment not even available at larger hospitals will ev- entually be used for major industrial surveys. Other >X-ray equipment in- cludes a $55, 000 unit, which is a gift of R.S. McLauchlin. A vacuum-Iike air conditioning system featured in the operating room, which filters air in from the ceiling, channels through the room and pipes it out through air ducts at floor base- boards, so that no air is re-used un- 1ess it has first gone through the filter system. At the moment, Ruddy General is operating on only a small fraction of its intended potential. For now, onlyminorsurgical oper- ations and 100 beds will serve the fast growing town. But the RuddyGeneral Hospital has al the needed fac il ities for an expanded Whitby right now. The Ruddy General waits prepared - to grow with a dyna:- mic town. Electronically--controlled beds feature bed patient panels with multi radio stations, remote control T. V.
