WHITBY FREE PRESS, Thursday, October 28th, 1971, Page TRAFALGAR CASTLE A MONUMENT TO THE. COUNTY TOWN From The 'Oshawa Vindicator', 1862 -'Old Tymer' 'T r aI f al g ar Castle is the name of the enormous building which as perhaps all of our readers are by this time aware, N. G. Reynolds Esquire, the Sheriff of Ontario County is erecting in the Town of Whitby. ...From a journalist's first view in 1862 On Saturday last, we enjoyed the pri- vilege of having an opportunity of visiting and inspecting it from cel1ar to dome. Des- c r i p t i on s of the vast proportions of the materials being, and to be consumed in it have heretofore appeared in our columns, ail of which have probably served to con- vey some idea of the greatness of the under- taking. B u t now that the rooms are being c o m p I eted, and the paint brush has been around ins ide and out, an idea of the beauty and convenience of the various apartments and suites of apartments may be obtained. The press inspects to dome from cellar The large halls, high ceilings, numer- ous rooms and extensive culinary arrange- ments which characterize the inter ior, ren- der it almost impossible for the visitor to keep the ideaout of his mind that the castie through which he walks is located on Broad- w ayor the Fifth Avenue, and is designed for a hotel of the St. Nicholas or Lafarge order. It is calculated by an eminent architect t h a t there i s sufficient standing room in t h e edifice, w i thout crowding, for three thousand persons. Nearly every room in the house is furnished with a register for i n t r oduction or exclusion of hot air from the f u r n aces, of which there are two, of themost improved description, in the base- ment; al so for cold air from the tops of the towers, each tower being built hollow for the purpose. There is also to each room, o p e n i n gs for the escape of foul air, and for s mok e, should it be found convenient to erect stoves in any of them. Ornate fireplaces But in addition to the arrangements for b r i nging heat from the furnaces, twenty- s e v e n o f the larger rooms are provided withfire-places suitable for the consump- tion of coal . These fire-places are all made of iron with white or coloured mar- b I e sides and mantles. Many of the latter embrace very costly and handsome pieces, of carving, of flowers, fruit, animals etc. The rooms are to be lighted with gas m an ufactured within two or three rods of the building on the south side. The works and the b u i I ding in which they are to op- erate are now being erected. The gas is to be made from petroleum. .. crude rock oil . according to the newly invented process of Messrs. Thompson and Hynd. M r Thompson isputting the gasworks in. Some of the furni ture for the principal rooms and the hall is already in the dining room, but none of it has yet been placed in its prop- er position. It is of the most handsome and costly description, is all of oak and of the Gothic style in harmony with the style of the building itself. The manufactory of G. P. Wal ter & Company in Bowmanville has the h on our of getting up this requisite to s u c h a h o u se. The carving done by Mr. M ab ille, formerly of Oshawa, is admired INTERIOR VIEW 1889 TRAFALGAR CASTLE 17 /t1y C 1900 ONTARIO LADIES COLLEGE 1908 by ai I and is highly complimented by the Sheriff. English carpets The carpeting has been manufactured in Eng i and, in pieces to fit the rooms, and h a s just arrived. As a matter of course, it is of the most beautiful design and costly material and is fully an eighth of an inch in thickness. The l oc a tion of Trafalgar Castle - a- c r o ss t h e east end of the street running e as t and west past the north side of the J a i I and Court House, and upon a gentle eminence, i s a most happy one. From the main stairway at the rear of the long and s p a cious hall, the eye takes in the whole street at a glance, past the jail yard nearly as far as Henry Street, on the west of the town. Cupola View But from the cupola a magnificent view can be had. On the west; nearly the whole of the Town of Whi tby; to the south and south- w e s t, Windsor Harbour, the blue waters of L a k e Ontario w i t h steamers and sai1 craf t and an occasionalview in ciear weat- her of the mouth of the Niagara River anc vessels entering and leaving it as well as the spray from the Seventh Wonder on the n o rth-west, fifteen miles distant, beyonc theChalkLake; hills with farm houses anc barns and cultivated fields upon them car be distinctly seen without the aidof glasses. while to thenorth-east, a cleared and well settled portion of the "Ridges" in Cartrighi a little south of Lake Scugog presents it- self to view. On the east alone is the vievý acontractedone, but lack of distance dir- ect s the eye w ith redoubled force to objects the observer can here be called to the un- cl oser at hand, and happi ly the attention o1 msurpassed character of the farming lands of On t ario County without any fear of in- vidious comparisons being drawn wi th other p a r t s of t h e Province at a like distance from the stimulus of the cities.
