The "lal Pines" Rally MapleLeaf Rally Club's "Tall Pines Rallyl", a 550 mile national champion- ship event held last Saturday and Sun- day was a good example of "How NOT to goRallying", especially ifyou'rea nov- ice. The rally itself was faultless, but the roads were an icy nightmare. Whitby's Entry W h i tby's own Skip Lane piloted my Renault 10 vwhich hadn't yet been taken on ashakedown run. Skip did an excellent job in the face of adverse conditions, some of which l'l1 relate. In the first tenmileswelostourskid pan going over r a i i w a y t racks. Two hours later we m i s s e d an icy right hand corner, but Sk ip managed to save us from going over a cl.iff by wedging the car against tree, but %wrote off" one fender. For- tunatelywehada chain and sledge ham- mer with us, so after winching the car back on the road and doing a quick "body j o b " we were back in the running, ai- t ho ug h we were nine minutes late for the next checkpoint. An hour i a ter we found ourselves trying to get up a steel trail with a high hump that the bottom of the car kept g e t t ing stuck on. We gave up, backed down thehill, and took a run at it. This time we tore loose from the bottom pan, but we made it! Out came the sledge hammer for some more "body work " and we lost five minutes into the next con- t r o i. Five minutes later we had a flat tire! Not to mention a motor mount that worked itself free. The n e x t control, somewhere near Or ill1i a , was being manned by fèllow Os hawa Motor Sport Club member Jeff Christie whokindly asked me, "How are things going?" !
