FUDDLE DUDDLE AWARDS FOR 1971 "AND TO THE BEST POLITICIAN PLAYING A POLITICIAN IN A POLITICIAN'S ROLE"..... At th i s time of the new year, it is timely to look back at ail the stupidity, poor planning, ignorance, intelligence and careful execut ion that was displayed during the past year, 1971. After careful consideration as to the above m e rits either good or bad, the "Na t ional Fuddle Duddle Association" m ak e s i ts awards. The Golden Peach award is given for intelligence which is shown to be above the average or when an individual or group has obviously done a much better than average undertaking. i n contrast, the Dried Up Prune A- w a rd is given to a group or individual showing unusual stupidity or ignorance or persons who have thoroughly botched a given task. The Golden Peach Award The first Golden Peach Award has to go to the people responsible for getting the road widening done in the downtown area as quickly as possible, even ahead of s ch e dule. Roadwork is always dis- tasteful at the best of times and the early completion meant an end of inconvenience for shoppers and merchants. Dried-Up Prune Award And speaking of merchants the first D r i e d-up P r u ne Award goes to those downtownmerchants who refuse to keep un iform business hours. AIlthough they cry po or mouth because they can't get business they insist on adding confusion t o t h e down town and other bus inesses while the plazas remain open as long as possible to accomodate shoppers. Iroquois Park A Gol den Peach Award to our mayor, Des Newman for his Iroquois Park idea. Al thoughhisideas might be a bit big for such a small town, -at least he has some g o od i deas whi ch is more than we can say for some of our neighbour mayors. Our C competion A Dried-Up Prune Award to our com- petition, in Ajax. Although t h e y c i a i m to be a Whitby paper they a c t u ail y only cover Ajax, news-wise, and the Iast story they ran on Des New- man's statement on the auto pact appeared more than 10 days after the Mayor made the statement to the press. Keep up the g o od work! it is noted that part of the reason for the award was for the editor c a i 1 ing his readers, "capitalist, imp- e r i a list swines" in an issue published on December 2nd. A G o I den Peach to the Toronto Sun for h a v i n g the guts to start out in the face of stiff competition. John Bassett A D r i e d -Up Prune to John Bassett f o r h i s failing with the Toronto Tele- gr arm. We believe he could have done more. Pierre On the National scale, a Golden Peach to Pierre Trudeau for proving he could take many holidays and still do just as good a job as did his predecessors and for producing a son to boot! Edgar Benson A D r i e d-Up Prune Award to Edgar B e n s on for his unending failure in the finance department. Almost every pre- d i c t i on without exceptionhe has made w r o n g. We d on 't know where you're leading us, Ed baby, but we feel it's like the blind leading the sheep. Some of us feel you should take a crack at weather predicting. The International scene On the International scene the Dried- Up P r un e a w a r d has to be shared by four countries. First to the United States for their financial efforts. They c an 1 t a fford to have too many imports but they can afford Amchikta. Second is Ireland for continued s t r i fe in Northern lreland. They have proven that ignorance does run rampant o n a m a s s scale even in these modern times. T h i r d to the countries of India and Pakistan for their wanton destruction of h um a n I ives and proper ty. Both coun- tries insist on waging war over political ideals even though they haven't solved the crucial rising birth rate and the mas- s i ve starvation and disease which pla- gue both countries. The International Golden Peach A- ward goes to our own beloved country, Canada. After many centuries of having our natural resources and brains looted Canada is looking ahead and star ting to realize she has to call a halt to the loot- ing. We hope it's not too late. There were thousands of entries for these awards but these were the final- ists and the only thing to do now is to b e n e f i t by our mistakes, or be happy with our successes and look forward to the 1972 "Fuddle Duddle Awards".
