This is not to say 1971 is forgotten. It will take a whil1 e to stop writing 1971 on those ch e q ues or letters, but most of al1, i t will take even longer to forget the many history-making events of 1971. Of course to the staff of the 'Whitby Free Press' 1971 was an historic year, in that on June the 30th, the first 'Whitby Free Press' w e nt out of the print shop a n d into the streets to announce a new paper for Whitby. T h e 'Whitby Free Press' took over where the 'Argosy', a former town paper left off when it died and the Free Press ran in competition with the 'Wh!itby Worl dt to try to keep the citizens of W h itby informed about the news events of the County Town. Thebattle between the Whitby World and the Free Press ended just over a month ago when the Whitby World sold out leaving the Free Press the sole newspaper in the Town of Whitby. A stormy entrance That first issue back in June made a s t o r m y entrance, if you'il pardon the pun, because the big story was the worst iightning and rain storm experienced in manyyears. So fierce was the lightning t h e Pol1 ice communications room over the Fire Haliwas struck alongwith scores of other buildings in the area. Muhammad Ali Further away many other events were h a p p e n ing to make 1971 worth remem- b e r i n g. In N e w York Ci ty's Madison Square Gardens, MuhammadAli took his f i r s t beating in the boxing ring on the receiving end of Joe Frazier's skiliful boxing gloves. it was a defeat which sur- p r ised AIi more than anybody, and one w h i c h he graceful ly acknowledged but Have you been noticed lately? Trudeau wedding Perhaps the most surprising event to Canadians in1971 was the secret m a r r i a ge in B r i tish Columbia of our P r i me Minister, Pierre Trudeau. The w e d d i ng was surprising because most Canadians be1 ieved Trudeau to be a con- f i r m e d bachelor and indeed Trudeau h i mself did 1ittle to lead people to bel- i e v e o t h e rwise. The wedding set the stage for a birth by Mrs. Pierre Tru- de au of a boy, Justin Pierre in an Ot- ta w a hospitai on December 25th, 1971. The Prime Ministers' residence would ring with the cries of a newborn child, an occasion which had only occured once before. In the "Hansard", which is the off icial copy of what is said in parlia- ment, members of parl1 iament would con- gr atulate a prime minister on the birth of hi s child and this had never before been recorded. S u r p rise weddings seemed to be in vogue in 1971 as N.D.P. member of parliament for this area, Ed Broadbent took a wife in a small, quiet ceremony in O t t a wa. In the December 15th issue of the Free Press the front page showed a picture of the newly marr ied Ed Broad- bent driving around on a ýmotorcycle with his 12-year-old step son, Paul. Gordie throws in towel On the sports scene in 171, a colour- fuI and highly rated hockey player dec- i ded to throw in the towel and call it quits. After twenty-fiveyears of break- ing and s e t t ing records, Gordie Howe figured itwas time to "Take a vacation" and so he subsequently announced his r e t i r e m e n t. In thi s same year a new n a m e to golf, Lee Trevino, won golf tournaments as easily as if he had in- vented the game himself. In football, the 'T o r o n to Argonaut s' made their first Don't miss Oshawa'S FIRST and ONLY BURLESQUE SHOW 0 Continuous 0 0 Mon.- Thurs 6.30 - 12.30 * Fri., Sat. 3:30 - 12:30 3 1) W-TIle • • REVUE • * 96 King East 5 Girls 0 Oshawa Each Show 1Y2hrs. * *....*.............. So many fumbles were there th a t a fter the game the ci ty fathers in T or onto were taking a new and harder 1lookabout the possibilities and feasibil- ities of artificial turf for Toronto. County Town Carnivai In July of '71, Whitby had its annual Coun t y Town Carnival and the Whitby Free Press ran a special edition on the e vent s of t he c arnivai. There were sightseeing tours and a beauty contest, a so a p-box race, sports tournaments, a p a r ad e, displavs and enough events to thr ill the town for five days. In the same issue the Free Press reported the n e w s r el1 e ase of a sports-recreation complex planned for Whitby which would cost $70million and would be located on the south side of the 401 highway just west of the town. The next issue would follow this up with pictures of the plan- ne d complex and another story on the opening of Whitby's Heydenshore Pav- ilion on Lake Ontario. Vietnam Across the ocean in Vietnam the fight- ing did not let up and the United States was the scene of many more demonstra- tions to end the war. In May Lt. Will1ian C a 1 I e y was convicted of murdering 22 Vietnamese viIlagers in a small hamlet in Vietnam cal led My Lai. So expensive w a s the war for the United States that on August 15, President Nixon announ- ced a 90 day p r i c e and wage freeze in his country. He wouldfollow this up with a 10% surcharge on imports into the U. S. And so in 1971 Canada severly felt thepinchof the United States' economic problems as dozens of Canadian workers were laid off.
