It isincongruoussaid the reeve, that this council woul d object to expansion of the Oshawa airport and endorse an in- ternational airport just 13 miles away. Indicating that Whitby would get all the problems of hotels, factories and other service areas, he reminded coun- cil that Whitby would have two runways directly overhead. "lIm convinced thatwe (council) have the necessary envision, enthusiasm and i n telligence to save this town from the lack of services in the past without the airport, " he said. Recalling that some people criticized men l ike Henry Ford and Sam McLaugh- 1 i n w i th the advent of the motor car, Councillor Robert Attersley said'that the s ame people were the first to use them upon development. It will be the same with the airport he said. 'Those who criticized it will end up using it. " Calling the airport "a great advan- tage to the communityl", Councillor At- tersl ey suggested that council should h a v e o f f e red al ternative sites to the g o v e r n m e n t before the decision was wasmade and not complain afterwards. Location suitable S t a ting that the town was fortunate in hav i ng the advantage of the airport without the immediate disadvantages of t h o s e 1iving closer to the site, Coun- c il 1o r Gerald Cox said he was aware that the reeve on his visit to England last year did not go by boat. "We are very for tunate, " said Coun- cillor Robert White, '1more people are g o in g t o b e n efit than those di sposed from where they are. " May or D e smondNewmanl, an avid supporter of an eastern location for the international airport said the only com- m en t he had to make was that 1'a lot of other vested interests have settled in on t he a ir p ort site with alot of people tr ading on the se peoplie's mi sfor tunes. " Reeve Edwards was defeated on his mo tion for Whitby's opposing support, being the only member of council in fav- .our of the mo tion. To place pressure on the Ontario County Board of Educa- tion and its officiais to react positively to these restricting ceilings. 3. To make the public more aware of the continuing impact that these ceilings will have on education within Ontario County. 4. To make parents more aware of the effects of current ex- penditures on their children's education. 5. To demonstrate to the public at large the implications of the government expenditure on new educational programrnmes. These have been implemented at the request of the Depart- ment of Education and, by their nature, necessitate an in- crease in expenditure.
