Page 2 E ditO'rial Cmen THE DISCOVERY Whitby, ltwould appear, is not ne ar ly as in s i1gnificant as Tories at Queen's Park would have had you bel- ieve one week ago. The Queen's Park Tories were at- tacked in a "Free Press" editorial last week after a spokesman at provincial h e adquarters had admitted the reason W h itby was excluded from government airport public information was because th ey "forgot". By the time they notic- ed the exclusion, it was too late as " A irport Information, A Special Sup- pI em ent" was a I r e ady on the press, and they couldn't hold up the press for Whitby, now could they ? Promptedby calîs from our readers afewdayslater, asking how they could get a copy of the government flyer, we once again called our friends at Queen's Park, this time asking to have some of the airport information flyers deliver- ed to the offices of the "Whitby Free Press. " "The address i s 301 Byron Street South; that's inWhitby - W H I T B Y -" we added. P r ecisely one hour and twenty-two m i n u t e s after the request was made, lo and behold, our doorway·was dark- ened by theshadow of an especially dis- patchedmessenger from Queen's Park, complete with a fresh stack of flyers. He didn't, incidentally, need a map to find Whitby. Co pi es of "Airport Information, A Special Supplement " and a comprehen- sive report on how the Provincial Gov- ernment feels the new Toronto airport could affect you, maybe obtained at our offices between 9 and 6 p. m. daily. Readers write Dear Sir; The proposed new Pickering airport I e aves me with a ni ghtmarish feel- ing of hopeless- ness for the future of our country if such a terri ble p l a n i s ever brought to fulfill- ment. If we don't act no w t o stop gov- e r nment and dev- elopers from tra- mpling and raping our irreplacea- ble heritage, we may as wellI give up thoughts of a real Canada to pass on to future genera- tions. This is only one of many instances where the cry and hue of "Progressi" is shouted with the definition that big- ger is better. Whenwill we real- ize theworthof human existence? 1 1m afraid it will on 1 y h appen in a no t - too-far-di s- t a n t f uture when we, or our grand- chiîldren, have to try to live with our disastrous misuse of land. Wewill have be- queathed them ac- re s of concrete r u n ways, towers of concrete high- rise, miles of con- cr e te roads, and nary a blade of h o nest grass will be found. Yours very truly, Vera E. Howard, R.R. , Brooklin. Sir; I w ouî1d like to fi nd out' from a pharmacist or any- one qual1 ified to answer, just what is the cost of dis- pensing a pre- scription, andon what basis is it calculated. Just recently, I had two prescr ipt- ion s within a few days of one another for the sa me kind of capsule. The first was for 6 and - Ron Winstanley Phyllis Millar - Barry Schroeder t h e other was for 20. I took both prescriptions to the same drug- s t o r e in Whitby. For the first six i was charged $ 2. 77, and a few days later the dr uggistwas un- ableto fill the or- der for the entire 2o, but supplied 14 a t the cost of $3. 37. There seemed to be such a discrep- an c y in the price that I thought I wouId check with other drug stores to try to determine w ha t I1was being charged for a dis- pensing fee. The first place I called was the Oshawa Taxpayer's Dream It's once again that time of year when most taxpayers quake with fear. Income tax time's roi led around, so get the aspirin bottle down. I now sit down with pen in hand, to figure out just where I stand. W il this year see me off the hook, or empty out my pocketbook ? The house is quiet; kids asleep, as I sit and ponder deep. Not a thing stands in my way, except the fear, i1111 have to pay." Five coffees later comes the time, l've got it down to the last line. Then with horror comes the score, for ail lve paid - I owe them more! I no sooner get to sleep it seems, than a phantom voice invades my dreams; It's John Turner, cash in hand saying, "welcome to the promised land." No income tax, no ice or snow, no winter nights at ten below. You're really going to like it here, ail is free (including beer). Then I awake to face the dawn, and realize the dream is gone. 1Ive bil1s to pay and work to do, and tax to pay for seventy-two. by Bruce Duggan 353 Rosedale Dr. branch of the same dr ug store, and I was tol d that these capsules are av- a i i a b I e w i t hout prescription at 50 for $8. 00, (or i6¢ each). I asked what the cost wouldbe if only 20 were required. Continues on page 10
