Metal fuel batter- ies have been used in space projects, buit they have been unacceptbble for consumer use because of the high cost of noble metal catalyst. The Sony battery uses powý.dered zi nc f uel and oxygen gas electrodes which require only a small amount of silver catalyst. The zinc is supplied continuously to the elctrodes, using the electrolyte as a carrier. The electrolyte is fed for a period of about 8 seconds, follow.ed by a rest of 52 seconds. During the feed per iod, some of the zinc particles carried by the electrolyte are trapped on the elec- trodes and current can be drawvn dur- i ng t he res t per iod, consum ing the zinc fuel. Dr. Hideo Baba, of the Battery Re- searchand Development group at Sony Research Centre, says one of the mer- its of the fuel battery system is that the fuel and the electrolyte can be re---. generated easily by electrolytic pro- cesses. One of the big features is the low initial cost on a mass production basis the pr ice w il1 be under $100. @VOLKSWAGENS 72'S PROM $2292 Have Your Own VW Diagnosed ut PICKERING CAR CENTRE LIOS OPEN THURSDAY TILL 10 P.M.
