Page 4, Thursday, June 15, 1972, WHITBY FREE PRESS La te!. There is not a more feared cry than the words "lwetre late!"I when it cornes to the newspaper business. Working on a weekly paper is very different f rom working on a daily be- cause you have more time to lose th ings. .. 1tike copy. Nowv that may sound kind of odd, but with a daily you have somethingl1ike an assembl y ufne and the mteriai doesnIt stay around long enough to get Iost. Around the Free Press we have all week to mispiace things so when press day cornes on Wednesday night it's time to pay the price. Another problem be- s ides misplacing copy is the garbage probiem. i t seems some days we make j more garbage than we do newspapers. fWe figured the bes t'way to get ri d of the garbage, which is mostiy paper, is to burn i t in the Icastielst century aid fireplace. The oniy catch is that in the middle of summer it tends ta get just a shade toa warm in the office when itis 9Odegreesoutside and there is a roar- ing fire in the fireplace. We can't leave the garbage around because mice like garba-ge (even paper) and 1 donIt have to tell you how my editor laves mice. l'm afraid of mice because if the girls in the office see one l'il get stomped again. But anyway itts bad enough we have a raar ing fire, and i tts hat as you knowv wha t, but we ran into another littie diî ff îcul ty thi s week. Our furnace wvent o ff a nd mare or iess died on the one c o i d day w e had. do, aur secretary, f c arne out with somne of her best Scot- tsh vocabuiary and the furnace refused to work. We i t a f ire and burned gar- b a ge t o keep warm so we weren' t too badly off. W he n the 1landi ord came in ta work our Jo bl1essed h im w i th an anc ien t Scot- tish curse as hewent pastour coid door. Not long after afurnace repairman camne Upf r omn the basement and informed us us the furnace was working. He was right, it was working great. . ail day, ail night and ail the next day. True to form our Jo put another ancient curse on the landlord the ne><t day be- cause the office was too hot. He said, "But yes terday you said itwas too co d!IlTo which Jo retorted, "That was Yesterday!"I Let me tell you youll1 neyer win an the safety switch. Now our edîtor aiso does not 1lîke the basement because # 1, that's where the mice, or mouse lives, ( B1iRD'M S Fairytales Story Hour The wonder of f ai rytal es will t a ke p reference a t t his Saturday m o r n i ng's Story Hour at the Whi tby Public Library.
