Page 9, Thursday, June 29, 1972, WHITBY FREE PRESS Dupont Announce A major expansion of its Whitby, Ontariopackaging films plant has been announced by Du Pont of Canada. The company will1 spend about $1, 500, 000 for additional plant space and slitting and extruding facilities to in- crease i ts pololefin films capacity by 25 per cent. The project will be com- pletedinmid-1973. Productionof "Vex- ar " plastic netting, also made at this Council Has $1,500,000. site, is not affected. The plant, whichwentinto operation on the 160-acre site in 1959, extrudes "Sci airfilm" polyolefin film from resins pr oduced at the company's plastics plant near Sarnia. "Sclairfilm" is produced prima r i I y for converters of specialty consumer packaging- includ- ing the recently developed pouch for m o t o r o i 1 - where requirements for Own Waffle I t's Whitby Councilmay be experiencing i n t e r nal problems similar to the New Democratic Party. While theNDP has the contradictory Waffle faction to contend with, Council ha s the Operations Committee, which w as described b y Deputy Reeve John Go o d w i n on Monday night as "a com- mittee defying council". The description was offered by the deputy reeve when a decis ion original ly reached by council as a whole body to expropriate land at d'hillier Park was vetoed by the operations committee. The move to expropriate 3. 8 acres of park land from Pickering Farms came by way of a council resolution. In a r e p o r t o f t h e operations committee back to council, however it was the committee's recommendation to not un- dertake expropriation at this time be- cause it was fel t by the committee there were other 'priorities' for the expen- diture of funds. "11find it difficul t to receive a com- m i t t e e recommendation that vetoes a decision which council as a whole body ha s m ad e a resolution on, " said the dep u ty reeve, explaining that council deigned to acquire the 3.8 acres of p a r k land at the southwest of d'hilier park by resolution, "and now we have al 1 these problems. " " Y o u al1 agreed on a $ 60, 000. 00 r o a d (I n d u s t rial Drive) leading no- where and found no difficulty with that, "he remonstrated. A motion by t h e deputy reeve sug- gesting that council strike the operat- i o n committee's r e c o mmendation and proceed to acquire the property councili ha d already resolved to do, was def- eated. Expansion ci ar i ty, strength and sealability are most demanding. Annual Canadian consumption of such spec iality films is estimated at more than 90, 000, 000 pounds with a growth rate of about 12 per cent; the special ity segment represents about 40 per cent of t o tal1 annual Canadian consumption of all types of polyethylene films.
